The general goal of fans going into the game was to keep it closer than in past years, when the game was over by halftime.
MSU semi-succeeded on that front, keeping it closer. But still left a lot of plays on the field that could have made it even closer.
Offense
QB: Chiles had a solid game. Yes, another interception. But I'll be lenient on the fumble, that was a facemask, which should have negated the turnover. Chiles finished 13/19 for 167 yards and a TD. Including sacks, he finished with negative rushing yards, but had a long rush of 8.
RB: The script finally flipped, with KLA getting more snaps (24-20) and carries (9-6). Although neither did much, with KLA getting 35 yards (3.9 YPC and long of 8) and Carter getting 27 yards (4.5 TPC and long of 19).
TE: The Velling fumble, on his lone reception, was bad. Parachek played a good amount, with 27 snaps. Partially due to Masunas being out. Parachek had two receptions for 27 yards. Velling and Paracheck combined for 71 snaps, Faleye and Hopper combined for 18. So our TE's combined for 89 snaps on 51 plays. We had 2 or more TE's on the field for 75% of plays. We played this game BIG.
WR: It was good to see Marsh and Glover back on the field. They both played 20+ snaps in their return. Glover had a good game, with 4 receptions for 53 yards and a TD. Marsh contributed a bit with 2 receptions for 30 yards. Foster was pretty quiet with 2 receptions, even with the most WR snaps by a large margin. Aziah Johnson continues to see the field, getting 20 snaps.
OL: I know we are sick of hearing about the OL injuries, but that context is needed to grasp what is happening on the OL. Ramil sat this game out, which forced true freshman Johnson to start at Left Tackle, a huge ask going up against one of the top edge players in the country. Newman and Miller were the LG and Center combo again. And Baldwin started at RG following the injuries to Phillips and Brocious. Lepo started at RT. With the game getting out of hand, the staff put in true freshman Rustin Young. Fincher and Dennis played limited snaps as well. Overall, only Newman and Miller had Average to Above Average grades by PFF.
