MSU was blown out back-to-back games vs. OSU and Oregon, the bye week couldn't have come at a better time. With time to rest, recharge, and game plan, MSU beat Iowa at home, and seemed in control from the opening kick to the final whistle.
This sounds crazy, considering past grades for each position, but I genuinely would give each group an A- or better in this game.
Jonathan Kim: Placekicker Jonathan Kim has been stellar all year, but his performance against Iowa was one for the ages. Kim went 6/7 on FG, with the lone miss being 50+ yards. He had a long of 50. While it was disappointing to see drives stall in or near the redzone, it was smart to take the points in the low scoring game. With this performance he set the school record for FGs made in a game.
Chiles: This was his most complete game in the Green & White. He had a season high competition percentage at 73%. It was his second highest QBR (Prairie View AM is #1) and passing yards in a game (256), and rushing yards (51). He did throw one INT, and had another that was interception worthy, but other than than took care of the ball.
The Running Game: Major credit to the OL, the same 5 started a few games now, and came out of the bye trying to prove a point against a stout Iowa defense. In addition to Carters 51 yards, Carter went 9-49 and KLA went 15-86 (5.7 YPC). The team total was 40-212-1. KLA also logged the highest PFF score of the game at 80.
Marsh and Foster: The clear 1-2 punch in the receiving room. Both had great games. Marsh went 8-113 (with an 80 PFF Score) while Foster went 5-100-1.
The Defense: Iowa has one of the best RBs in the country, but struggles to pass. MSU shut down the run for most of the game, making them one-dimensional. Kaleb Johnson went 14-98, which looks good on paper. But 75 of those yards came on one play. Otherwise, he went 13-23. We shut down the run.
